Keynote Speaker: Drew Flaada
Drew Flaada is the Director of the IBM/Mayo Collaboration, Life Sciences, and Blue Gene Software Development. His organization is responsible for managing and working a multi-year collaboration in place with the Mayo Clinic to enable significant improvements in medicine through the use of information technology. His organization also includes the core software development team for the IBM healthcare and life sciences industry, as well as the system software development team for IBM's Blue Gene supercomputing system—the highest performing super computer in the world.
Drew joined IBM in Rochester in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from North Dakota State University. He has worked in a variety of technical and management assignments within IBM, with the majority of his career spent in product development. His key roles have included managing system design, hardware development alliances, system architecture, microprocessor development and integration, large scale project management, product strategy, product management, and product marketing. He has been very active in working with IBM customers to help them set their strategic IT direction. Drew received his Master of Science in Management of Technology in 1996 from the University of Minnesota. In his executive positions with IBM, Drew has managed product management and marketing, software strategy across the eServer product family, and most recently was responsible to develop new opportunities for IBM at the Rochester development lab.
Drew is very active in higher education, and serves as a volunteer on an advisory board for the University of Minnesota, and is a member of the Greater Rochester Area University Center (GRAUC) higher education advocacy board. Drew was appointed by Governor Pawlenty to the Rochester Higher Education Development Committee, and has joined the Minnesota BioBusiness Alliance board.
