My Portfolio Page
Christine Crawford
My name is Christine Crawford. I am a master's student in Instructional Design and Technology. I've been fortunate to have many opportunities during my education to practice my "craft." This site is meant to display my work and maybe throw in a little fun stuff here and there... like this photo of my daughter with a slight plug for UND's Lego Robotics program.
My daughter, Morgan (on the right), helping her friend build their Lego Robot in the cSci Lego Robotic Camp summer 2008.
P.S. This is my first real web site, so please bear with me as I tweak the design and add more content.

Projects
Alice
Alice is a free educational software that teaches students computer programming in a 3D environment.
Alice Tutorial
Using the e-learning software, Articulate, I created a simple tutorial for Alice.
Please feel free to give it a try.

MERLOT Roll-out for UND
As a practicum for my master's program, I am assisting in the roll-out for MERLOT.org on campus. MERLOT.org is a repository for learning materials, assignments, comments, personal collections and snapshots geared toward higher education.
Membership is free to anyone. Materials are categorized into 14 different learning types.
Each type has an Editorial Board that "triages" learning materials to determine whether they should go through the peer review process.
Once in peer review, two or three reviewers report to the Board who then compiles a review that is posted on the website with the author's permission.
Unlike Google, where URLs float to the top by popularity, MERLOT's searches promote those materials with the highest reviews and ratings.
See my blog about the practicum.
MERLOT has invited me to work with them to develop a new discipline on virtual learning spaces. This means I have the privlege of working with Jonathon Richter of
the Salamander Project.
I'm excited to see where this all goes.
Twitter Tutorial
Twitter is now a favorite of mine for communicating with friends and colleagues. Twitter is a microblogging application that asks the question, "What are you doing?" Please join me in the Twitterverse by following me at "IDTweets." This tutorial, created using mediawiki, will help along the way.
Inspiration Tutorial
This tutorial was created in 2006 using PowerPoint and Adobe Captivate 2 with the goal of assisting other IDT students in learning Inspiration and the basics of curriculum mapping.
The tutorial is still being used by IDT faculty at UND to support their students.
ID Leader Presentation
Using Breeze Presenter (now Adobe Connect Pro), I created a presentation for the Survey of IDT class. The assignment was to showcase the career of an Instructional Design Leader. I chose Dr. David Williamson Shaffer because of his work in epistemic games.
Web pages
GPA Calculator
I am developing a GPA Calculator which I hope the Instructional Design and Technology program will adopt as a resource once it's finished.
Learning Theories
I have created a web page for one of my favorite topics; Learning Theories. I describe Robert Gagne's Varieties of Learning and the Coginitive Information Process Model.
I also map Gagne's Nine Events on to the CIP model diagram to help illustrate the connection between the events and what is going on in the brain.
Feedback is welcome. This is a work in progress; I will update with more theories in the future.
Teaching and Learning in Second Life
During an internship conducted with the Center for Instructional Learning Technologies (CILT), I examined the 3D virtual world of Second Life to determine if and how it should be used on campus. After adoption, I designed and led workshops and presentations to educate faculty, staff and students in basic SL skills and possible uses in higher education.
All of the work I have done in Second Life (seen below) revolves around the pedagogy of effective design in an emerging technology. I am passionate about Second Life as a teaching tool in part because I believe it offers a sense of presence and social networks that would be extremely costly and difficult to replicate in real life. I have had numerous opportunies to practice my skills in instructional design; experience that I would never have had without SL. I've grown as a leader, as a designer and as a teacher. I've published papers and presented at conferences. My skills are honed, not limited, by my experience in this virutal world.
Second Life at UND
The image above is linked to UND's small parcel of land in Second Life which is leased for faculty to use for teaching and research. This link will open a "SLurl" which stands for Second Life URL. Click the "Teleport Now" button to open Second Life and take you to UND's island (you must have Second Life installed on your machine for the SLurl to work).
Michael Crawford, Morgan Crawford (above) and I conducted a workshop for faculty and staff this summer on this virtual land. Yes, that's right, I said Morgan, my nine year old daughter. She stood in front of the audience and showed them Webkinz and Club Penguin. I thought this would be a poignant message for faculty; if you're still going to be teaching in 8 years when this child enters your classroom, you might need to know something about virtual worlds!
MUVErs
The Linden Lab approved group, MUVErsLLC selected me as instructional design consultant to build a standard Second Life (SL) orientation that will be sold to and customized for universities and corporations. More info to come (If I tell you now, I'll have to kill you....)
Scholarship Award
The Society for Technical Communication’s Instructional Design & Learning (IDL) Special Interest Group awarded me with the 2008 annual scholarship, calling my research ideas "innovative and visionary." Thank you STC!!
International Second Life Educators (InSLed)
I co-taught a course called "InSLed" (International Second Life Educators where we trained faculty from Clemson Univerisity in South Carolina and Southampton University in the UK.
My co-teachers and I presented at the Second Life Educators Community Convention 2008.
Kuttara Zen Avatar Training Trail (KZ)
Created by myself and three other instructional designers, Kuttara Zen is a beautiful and serene build that launched my career in SL. I will soon post PDFs of the documents created in the process of the design. KZ and its design were presented at the E-Learn 2008 conference.
